PART III
THE FIRE GROWS
Songs 7-8

7. interlude 3
(i saw a man)
1:35
I saw a man through a fire, his eyes were dead embers
A claw of snakes swarmed at his hip
Yawning mouths at his legs, swallowing him whole
Swallowing all of it
All of us.
I turned and left the man
The fire
I left him to eat himself alive¹
1. Wolves avoid humans. Their social behavior is revealed in the pack.
To crack his bones between his teeth
To leave him to his own strange dreams
And me to mine
But everyday the fire grows
The smoke blows
They feed and feed and feed
And stomp us out

8.
under the white pines
6:38
When you dream, do you dream about the kill?
‘CAUSE WHEN I DREAM I CAN’T SEE ANYTHING BUT YOU²
2. Wolves bond deeply. Socially, they are highly intelligent and sophisticated. Their family unit is quite phenomenal and their mating habits are too.
And when you kill do you kill like in your dreams?
‘Cause when I see you I can feel you killing me
I used to hide behind a pair of friendly eyes
But I could tell you saw right through my stupid lies
I don’t want to bug ya, I just want be your little beast
I know unrequited love gives everyone the creeps
I bit off more than I can chew
(I kind of like your bite)
I WANTED TO TAKE THE WORLD AND GIVE IT BACK TO YOU³
3. Alpha wolf mates are devoted, loyal and protective. They usually pair for life.
(It hardly ever was mine)
YOU SET THE PACE,
I’M SET TO CHASE YOU⁴
4. They create dens to keep their young family members safe. Dens may be used repeatedly or the female may dig a new den year after year.Dens are generally dug away from the territory borders to avoid invasion and are usually hidden, but not far from water.
Food is brought to the den for the nursing female until pups are old enough to leave. This showcases how the entire pack takes care of the pups.
Anything it takes under the moon
THE DAYS ARE MELTING⁵
5. Wolves mate once per year and the pups are usually born in May.
And it almost feels the same
I act as though I’m not just playing at this game
As if I’m not hopelessly preoccupied
I want to be near you, I need to be near you, I’m gonna die
I used to sing it out of tune
(I have an appetite for it)
I sang and who knows, baby, maybe I still do?
(Divergent intimacy)
I howled incorrectly but you let me, you always knew how to protect me
I’m never lonesome when I scream under the moon
Out from the earth, a rising tide, a push like it’s starting to breathe
A pulse, a pull, this sacred ground, it’s soil that seeps into me
Acid and rust, wash it away, closing our eyes, smelling the rain
Let the ashes burn a ring, round the rashes
Let it burn, let it mend
Let it heal, let is cleanse
Building a wall of mud and spit
Chase out the ones who did never quite fit
Predate predatory, it’s always been
The ones we’re afraid to let in
We’re trapped in this hot skin
It’s a heat we were born in
It feels like we’re boilin’
We’re on fire
WE’RE DROPS ON A BLOODLINE
WE’RE STAINS ON A VALENTINE
WE’RE DEATH IN A WAR CRIME
WE PLOTTED THE WAYS AND THE DAYS⁶
6. Wolves are one of the only known species in the wild that will take care of their sick, injured and elderly, even when resources are low.
Under the white pines
I haven’t missed you in a long time
Oh yeah it’s a bad sign
We’re nipping at the end of our tales
